What causes stains on teeth?

Stains on teeth are usually caused by external factors and poor oral hygiene habits. But can also be due to biological and genetic causes.

Here are some of them:

  • Cigarettes: Smoking is one of the main causes of external stains on teeth
  • Smoking and drinking coffee at the same time, a habit of many smokers, potentiates the action of these harmful agents.
  • Pigmented beverages: Dark, highly pigmented beverages, whether natural or artificial, such as wine, coffee, teas, and sodas, are examples of drinks that leave residues that attach to the enamel of the teeth.
  • Traumas: Bleeding in a tooth that has suffered a strong impact can infiltrate the dental tubules, giving a darkened appearance.
  • Tetracycline: This is little known. Tetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat various infections. When used for long periods during pregnancy and in children with developing teeth, it can cause dental discoloration, resulting in dark stains.
  • Lack of calcium in teeth: Stains resulting from tooth decalcification can be active or inactive.
  • Fluoride: Dental fluorosis is characterized by white spots caused by excessive fluoride intake during the formation and maturation phase of tooth enamel in children.
